In July of 2013, the state of Illinois became the last state to approve concealed carry permits. Opponents and naysayers to the legislature (including the Chicago Police Superintendent) warned of a rampant increase in gun violence as soon as the permits were issued as the streets would be full of gun toting vigilantes taking the law into their won hands. In January of 2014, Illinois residents were allowed to begin the CCW permit process and the first permits were granted in mid-February.
Chicago just released the crime rate statistics for the first quarter of 2014, so let’s see how things went:
- The first three months of the year saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013–a 9 percent drop–and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
- There were 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims, drops of 26 and 29 percent respectively, according to police statistics.
- Compared to the first quarter of 2012, there have been 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer shooting victims. Overall crime is down 25 percent from last year, and police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months.

Although it’s far to early in the year to really consider those numbers valid, they are promising. Should the numbers really go down at the end of 2014, I’m sure most politicians and opposition police officials will attribute the reduction in crime to a number of new programs deployed by the Chicago police (which is exactly what the current Chicago police superintendent has already started doing).
Here’s an interesting video that delves deeper into the topic via a video radio interview with the President of a Chicago based pro-gun women’s group.
